PREP YOUR CLOSET

First thing first, it’s in your interest to spend a little time prepping your closet so it works efficiently and effectively.  Don’t stress over finding the time to do all 8, just choose 1 or 2 to tackle at the weekend and I assure you you’ll notice a marked different come Monday morning.

  1. Make sure your closet consists of only the pieces that fit you.  Removing the clothes that don’t fit will make much easier to see what you have which will save you time when creating outfits.
  2.  You want to be able to see everything without rummaging so, if possible, hang everything.  Anything that is folded and stored in draws will be forgotten about and could be crucial to making an outfit work.
  3. Hang your clothing in groups by type (trousers, jeans, sweaters, blouses, dresses…you get the idea) and for extra time saving points, I recommend grouping your tops by sleeve length. I’m fully aware that this might sound a little OTT but trust me, it helps when it comes to layering an outfit.
  4. While I don’t advocate this; I know some people find it really helpful to hang their clothes as outfits.  The reason I’m not a fan of this method is I believe it can stifle creativity a little, so if you choose to do this make sure you switch things around from time to time.
  5. Store your accessories somewhere that’s easy to access, and make sure your jewelry isn’t all tangled together – untangling necklaces will loose you precious time!   If you store your shoes in boxes, photograph the contents and stick the photo to the front of the box to save you opening all the boxes to find the pair you’re looking for.
  6. Get things right from the beginning and purchase pieces that mix and match easily. You’ll find that you have a higher success rate when the time comes to grab and go.
  7. Add some a few WOW pieces to your collection – maybe a coat in a bold shade or a pair of statement shoes – these will enable you to add personality to your look with very little effort.
  8. For work wear it can be helpful to have a uniform of some sorts, whether that means sticking to a limited color palette or a select few items of clothing. Having less to choose from will make it easier to decide what to wear.  It might also be beneficial to group your workwear together in your closet so you’re not rummaging around too much in the morning.

PLAN YOUR OUTFITS TO SAVE YOU TIME

20 time saving style tips to help you save time and master swoon worthy style in record time. Tips on outfit planning, finding outfit inspiration, and prepping your closet

  1. Create a look-book of all the outfits and looks you like in magazines and online, and have it close to hand for those times when you need a little inspiration.  Don’t worry, this really doesn’t need to take long, if you use Pinterest or Evernote you can simply capture style inspiration in seconds and because both apps are available on your phone, your inspiration can be viewed in a flash.
  2. Every time you put together a great outfit, take a quick snap so you have a record of it – these can then be added to Pinterest (create a private pin board if you don’t want others to see your photos) or Evernote. Or you could print them off and stick them on the inside of your closet door or or compile an album.  When I’m going through my clients wardrobes I photograph every outfit we put together so they don’t forget anything and many of them tell me how helpful this is when they’re having one of those days when they don’t know what to wear.
  3. Plan your outfit the night before and don’t forget to check the weather!  If you’re not feeling it, check out all the inspiration you’ve pinned and clipped – this is when all your effort really comes to fruition.

FOR BONUS EXTRA TIME

20 time saving style tips to help you save time and master swoon worthy style in record time. Tips on outfit planning, finding outfit inspiration, and prepping your closet

  1. If you hang your clothes to dry on hangers rather than draping them over a drying rack, you’ll have fewer stubborn creases to iron out and may be able to skip ironing all together.
  2. And while we’re on the subject of hanging clothes – Store jeans and trousers/pants using clippy hangers and hang them from the hem so the weight of the waist band pulls out any creases created through wear.
  3. Have a pair of nude pumps in your closet that match your skin color, they will go with absolutely everything and you’ll be glad of them if the moment arises when you can’t decide what shoes to wear.
  4. Make sure you have some skin colored underwear and always wear it if you’re wearing white or cream. The last thing you want to happen is to notice your black bra through your shirt in the mirror as you’re running out of the door!
  5. Another item worth having in nude is a good pair of skin colored tights, you’ll be glad of them on those days when you don’t have time to shave. And if you’re unlucky enough to snag them, stop the ladder climbing with a little blob of clear nail varnish.
  6. Purchase some dry shampoo. I swear by this stuff! It enables me to get away with washing my hair about twice a week.  I  spray it in before I go to bed so it soaks up all the oils overnight and if there is any powder residue in the morning I just blast it out with a hairdryer.  When I do wash my hair, I’ll wash it in the evening, let it air dry and go to sleep with it slightly damp – my hair has a little natural wave to it so I embrace the kinks that appear in the morning and use my flat irons to add a few more – it only takes a few minutes!
  7. If jeans and an old tee is the only outfit you can be bothered to pull together, you can still style it up a little and add a little flair by half tucking the tee and adding a necklace or scarf. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference!
  8. Find a couple of bold bright lip colors that suit you and always have them to hand. A bold lippy never fails to make me look and feel good when I don’t have time to do much else!
  9. And last but not least, if you just don’t know where to begin, hire a stylist! I’ve helped countless women create a more harmonious life through detoxing their closet, empowering them to shop effectively for their style, shape and lifestyle, and by sourcing a collection of clothes that they don’t have to think about.
